PROF. MALIK PEIRIS

Professor Malik Peiris joined The University of Hong Kong in 1995, and is now Chair of Virology at the School of Public Health, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, China. He co-directs the WHO H5 Reference Laboratory and the WHO SARS-CoV-2 reference laboratory at The University of Hong Kong. Currently, he serves on many Hong Kong and WHO advisory committees, including the WHO International Health Regulations Emergency Committee on COVID-19.

In 2003, Professor Peiris and his team discovered SARS-CoV, a novel coronavirus, as the etiological agent for SARS. He has contributed to understanding the emergence, spread and pathogenesis of SARS - and of viral zoonotic avian influenza diseases, including their control. He is currently investigating the recently emerged SARS-CoV-2 that caused the COVID-19 pandemic.

He is an alumnus of University of Ceylon and University of Oxford and the first Sri Lankan to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. The Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur of France and John Dirks Canada Gairdner Global Health Award are among many honurs that he has been awarded.

In 2006, Time Magazine selected him as one of the 63 Asian Heros of the last 60 years for his contributions to the control of infectious disease epidemics. The University of Oxford announced Prof. Peiris as one of its honorary degree recipients for 2023.

PROF. RAJ SOMADEVA

Professor Raj Somadeva is a renowned archaeologist and a Senior Professor at the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology (PGIAR) of University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Archaeology in 1986 and Master of Philosophy (Mphil) Degree in Archaeology in 1994, both from the University of Kelaniya. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Degree from the Department of African and Comparative Archaeology of the Faculty of Philosophy of the Uppsala University Sweden in 2006.

His Ph.D. thesis titled "Urban Origins in Southern Sri Lanka" was accepted as a part of the publication series on Global Archaeology in 2006. He was a Charles Wallace Research Fellow (2005) of the Institute of Archaeology at the University of London.

He is a founder fellow of the Sri Lanka Council of Archaeologists. His publication titled "Rock Paintings and Engraving Sites in Sri Lanka" won the State Literary Award for the Best Academic Publication in English, in the year 2013. He has authored many books and research articles on various aspects of archeology.

PROF. JUDITH SIMCOX

Prof. Simcox is an experienced mentor with a demonstrated history of working in both academic and industrial research. She is an associate professor of Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, USA. Prof. Simcox received her PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Utah. The Simcox laboratory is focused on two unanswered questions: how are liver-produced lipids taken up and metabolized in brown adipocytes and how is hepatic lipid processing regulated in cold exposure? Her lab uses lipidomics, genetics, and cellular and molecular biology techniques coupled with mouse physiology to answer these questions. Her research interests also span to studying ways to combat age-related obesity and metabolic disease with the goal of increasing health span and life span.

She was recently selected as a Freeman Hrabowski Scholar for the year 2023 by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), recognizing her potential as an outstanding early career faculty in science to become leaders in their research fields and create diverse and inclusive lab environments.
